The Magnolia Story – a must read for a positive vibe

We have been very fortunate this summer to take a few mini vacations. One with just my husband and I and others with our whole crew. While on vacation I was able to catch up on some fun reading. On the top of my want to read list was The Magnolia Story. I am a huge fan of Fixer Upper, the HGTV hit show featuring Chip and Joanna Gaines so I was very excited to get a behind the show look at how things work.

I was not completely sure what to expect with this book. I thought it would talk about how they got started with their show and maybe talk about their business. I was right, it did do those things but it also did so much more.

The book goes into great detail about how Chip and Joanna met, dated and eventually got married. Throughout that story they also talk about their faith, the tough times with their business and their growing family.

One thing I really enjoyed that I did not know before reading the book was how many different jobs and businesses Chip tried his hand at. I have an entrepreneurial spirit and sometimes I just feel like I am a little crazy for doing what I do. I think to myself often that I just need to give up and get a “real job”! But after reading this and hearing that there are other people like me, it gives me some motivation to keep going when things get rough. I can just think to myself… what if Chip quit when the going got tough. Now I am not trying to land a TV show on HGTV but it is nice to be able to contribute to our household income while putting my job as a wife and a mom first.

Another aspect of the book that really spoke to me was learning that Joanna made the decision to close her business and focus on her family when things got too busy for her. I have had to make some hard decisions in my business such as pulling out of profitable retail locations because it was taking too much time away from my family. Those are hard decisions to make as a business owner but it was refreshing to hear that someone as successful as Joanna went through some of the same challenges when she was a small business owner.

In a nutshell, I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend it for anyone looking for a good read. It was so nice to read such a positive story. Even when they talked about things being tough, their faith in Christ and their family kept them going. If you are not a business owner, entrepreneur or a fan of the show, I would still recommend The Magnolia Story. It is an easy read that leaves you with a joyful feeling. Besides, don’t you want to find out why Chip went to jail! Happy reading!
